THE SEASON OF ADVENT

THE SEASON OF ADVENT

You might wonder what the Season of Advent is all about. Christmas decorations are already out in all the stores. Why not just start singing Christmas carols at church right away, too?

“Advent” is a Latin word that means “coming.” The season of Advent helps us prepare for the high festival of Christmas much like Lent helps us prepare for Easter. The roots of this preparatory season go back all the way to the AD 400’s in France and Italy. The length of Advent was fixed at four weeks by about AD 600.

There are three major themes in the Season of Advent:

  • the coming of our Lord in the flesh at Christmas
  • the coming of our Lord to us right now in Word and sacrament, and
  • the coming of our Lord at the end of time.

Advent is a time of repentance, but also a season of joy-filled anticipation. The
liturgical color for Advent that we display here at Resurrection is blue. Blue is the color of the sky, emphasizing the expectant nature of the season and of our faith. We look to the skies awaiting our Lord’s second Advent, just like the Magi of old looked to the sky and followed the star to the newborn King.

May our Lord richly bless you as you prepare to greet Jesus this Christmas!
